Course Description
This course is an introduction to the current French language, with a strong focus on pronunciation. It lays the first part of foundations of the French language for further study, as well as learning how to politely ask and give introductory information about yourself.
- A textbook is not required to be purchased for this course.
What your course will cover
- To recognise and use appropriate greetings and polite phrases (bonjour, merci, …)
- Formal and informal ‘you’ in French: rules about using ‘tu’ and 'vous'
- To ask and give personal information (name, nationality, job and how do you feel): Je m’appelle Paul, je suis australien, je suis dentiste. Ça va bien. Et vous ?
- Classroom phrases (Vous lisez, vous répétez ...)
- Cultural points
You will learn the following grammar:
- The French alphabet to spell names
- The French rules of pronunciation: Nasal sounds, liaisons abréviations (au revoir, ...)
- Numbers from 0 to 69
- Definite articles: le – la – les
- Masculine & feminine, singular & plural forms of nouns and adjectives
- Subject personal pronouns: je, tu, il, ...
- Present tense of the verb ‘to be’
What to bring
- A pen and notebook for work done in class.
- A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
The program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.
The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:
- A1 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French 1 – French for beginners – French 8) completed within around 96 hours: Students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.
- A2 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French Intermediate), completed within around 130 hours: Students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects.
- B1 level: 13 terms of Adult Education (French Independent) completed within around 210 hours: Students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers.
- B2 level: Adult Education (French Advanced): Students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.
- Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity

Please choose your course carefully. A full refund is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
