Course description
Students who enrol in this course must be able to speak in basic French at an acceptable level. Textbook purchase required: see “What to bring” and "Important information"
Students have achieved the A1 & A2 levels of CEFR (around 220 hours of French Adult Education classes) studying both books ‘Grammaire progressive du français débutant complet’ & ‘Grammaire en dialogues debutant’ or its equivalent elsewhere.
The aim of the course is to improve your conversation skills, extend your vocabulary, revise grammar points and learn new ones.
New students who wish to enrol in this course are advised to contact Adult Education to find out whether it is the correct course for them.
This is not an intensive course but it will require some study and doing weekly homework.
What your course will cover
In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere, you will have:
- Regular revision exercises covering all the grammar learned to date
- Listening and reading exercises to enhance comprehension, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and cultural awareness
- Development of oral and listening skills with lots of practice on all kind of topics (work, leisure, food, holidays ...)
You will learn the following grammar:
- The tense for verbs: conditionnel
- Double personal pronouns (le lui, leur en...)
- Complex relative pronouns (ce qui, dont...)
- Indirect speech

Please note – Grammaire en dialogue is a full collection of books so please ensure that you purchase the niveau intermediaire book by the author as above, with a group of 5 friends laughing on the cover.
This textbook is used for around 10 sessions of Adult Education French independent (roughly 120 hours of tuition in total), achieving the first part of the B1 level of CEFR (see more information about the CEFR below).
Be aware that the courses don’t follow the chapters as displayed in the book.
If you are concerned about buying a book that may be of no use to you then please check the viability of your class with Adult Education before purchasing your textbook.
- A pen and notebook for work done in class.
- A folder for your handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
- Any French verb book (or tool).
- French/English dictionary (or tool) (eg Collins, Robert).
Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol.
The french language program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.
The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:
- A1 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French 1 – French for beginners – French 7) completed within around 96 hours: Students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.
- A2 level: 10 terms of Adult Education (French Intermediate), completed within around 120 hours: Students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects.
- B1 level: 10 terms of Adult Education (French Independent) completed within around 120 hours: Students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers.
- B1 second part to B2 level: Adult Education (French Conversation): Students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.
- Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity
