Course description

Nurture your creativity and explore where your writing can take you. A series of workshops playing with words and forms: poetry, short story, memoir, myth and journalling. A flexible course catering to participants' interests.
Creativity is part of being human. We may express our creativity through stunning dinner parties, rooms to be lost in, gardens that make our neighbours kink their necks, wilderness in watercolours, or we may have a need to write.
If you feel the need to write, you are not odd or alone. One of the best ways to explore this talent within you is to join a writing class, meet others like yourself, and be guided by an experienced teacher.
Find out where you want your writing to take you, how to nurture your creativity, and how to craft words.

What your course will cover

Exploring ways in which writers work, from inspiration to publication. We will look at where ideas come from, how to develop them, and how to overcome blocks and obstacles. This will be achieved through a series of writing exercises which will be useful whether you’re writing short stories, poetry, memoir, novel etc. We’ll cover how to get the most out of imagery and metaphor, how plot, dialogue, point of view, story arcs and character development work, and the basics of editing. Students will also be shown how to keep writer’s journals and notebooks, and introduced to invaluable resources for writers.

What to bring

  • A short sample of writing you admire (optional).
  • A short sample of your writing or someone else’s that needs editing (optional).
  • Notebook and pen.
