Course description

This workshop is suitable for beginners to intermediate students.

Discover your artistic talent and improve your drawing skills through a mixed media approach to creating images.
This workshop will help you develop fundamental drawing skills as it feeds your inspiration through experimentation with a wide range of media.
Enjoy the light and space of this large studio environment while gaining confidence in your art making.

what your course will cover

Over the two days your tutor will introduce a selection of different media with demonstrations and practical exercises based on a variety of subjects. Individual and group instruction will be given with time spent appreciating work and progress throughout the sessions.

  • Overview of tools & materials
  • Drawing skills 101
  • Experiment with wet/ dry media, exploring their mark-making potential in relation to the basic elements of drawing.
  • Develop strategies for beginning a work, layering to successfully combine media and making use of ‘accidental’ marks.
  • Work from small studies to larger, sustained drawings.

What you will need to bring

Materials List

  • Sketch book
  • A3 drawing paper (220 gsm) pad or sheets (Como)
  • 2B graphite pencil, white plastic eraser & a grey ‘kneadable’ eraser
  • Coloured pencils (small set including white)
  • Stick of compressed Charcoal - (soft, 4B) (not willow)
  • Stick of white conte (hard pastel)
  • Small bottle of Black India ink
  • Tube of white acrylic paint (Jo Sonja brand preferably) or tube of white gouache
  • Selection of brushes -

(including a no.6 round nylon & several flat natural bristle brushes)

  • Containers for holding water & for mixing washes (small jam jars with lids)
  • 2 x Bulldog clips & a Drawing board – slightly larger than A3
  • Digital Camera (phone camera)
  • Apron/old shirt to protect clothing

Important information

Most classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying a class materials that may be of no use to you, please check the viability of your class with Adult Education before making your purchase.

Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.
