Course description

How to Draw from Scratch'

This course is for those who want to learn to draw, regardless of where you stand in life. Our tutor, Gaye, firmly believes everyone can learn to draw, just as most of us learn to read and write.
There are many ‘How to Draw’ books, but Gaye can enlighten you by showing you together as a group and as individuals, how to get started on the journey. The requirement from you, as a student, is simply to want to learn and to do some practise, with some guidance.
Like learning anything, practise makes us better at it.

What your course will cover

  • how to interpret what you ‘see’ onto paper
  • the difference between ‘left side of the brain’ and ‘right side of the brain’ perception and how to distinguish between them
  • creating 3 dimensional form
  • how to pencil render for enhanced 3 dimensional form
  • how to create a light source
  • how to draw subjects such as hands, eyes and trees
  • how to create depth of space on the paper for effective composition
  • how to implement creative concepts
  • how to execute your artistic licence

The ultimate objective of this course is to give students enough grounding to further develop skills independently.

What to bring

  • Drawing Pad – A3 or A4 size, prefereably smooth textured cartridge with gsm (paper thickness) higher than 110 gsm (Arttec Como pad (210gsm) is recommended)
  • Drawing pencils – 2B, 4B and 2 × 6Bs – any brand okay, however tutor recommends the blue ‘Staedtler Mars Lumograph’ pencils
  • Pencil sharpener and Eraser
  • The pencils and pad suggested are available from Ad Art and Artery
