Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental and critical skills that are applied in all good editing programs. It is also designed to give you an appreciation of both the free and commercial programs available for editing so that you can make an informed decision about which software solutions best suit you.

Most of the practical skills will be taught using free software including Darktable, GIMP, Rawtherapee and Microsoft’s Image Composite Editor (ICE). I will also give a brief demonstration of unique features found in the proprietary software such as Photoshop, Lightroom and Paintshop Pro and Canon’s Photostitch.

After many years of teaching photography and imaging classes I have found the free software of Darktable, GIMP and ICE have nearly all my photography needs covered. So, I would hope at the end of the workshop you will feel comfortable starting your journey to use these programs. But if you have chosen to stick with commercial programs from Adobe or elsewhere this course will still give an valuable understanding of the universal skills needed for good editing.

What your course will cover

This course will introduce the most useful and important tools to adjust exposure, colour and recover shadow details. You will learn the correct ways to sharpen images and perform noise reduction to reveal the finest details in the image. We will cover how to do localised adjustments with masks in Darktable or a combination of layers and masks in programs like GIMP and Photoshop. We will combine multiple images to do panorama stitching and exposure blending of bracketed exposures. This short course also serves as an introduction to the more comprehensive GIMP and Darktable courses that will be offered through Adult Education in 2023.

What to bring

Please bring your own laptop.
Once students have enrolled, they will be supplied with links to the free software utilised in the course to download in readiness for the class.
