Course Description

Learn to make rings to size, bezel-set stones and shape metal using hammers. Some tools supplied. Approx. $125 for basic kit or bring your own. (beginners kit is fine). Basic jewellery making skills including sawing, soldering and polishing are essential.
It is assumed that all students know how to use: a jeweller’s piercing saw; file, emery and polish metals; and hard solder using silver solders.

What your course will cover

In this course you will learn how to -

  • Make a decorative metal ring that fits your finger.
  • Make a pendant with a cabochon shaped stone.
  • Make a ring with a cabochon or claw set stone.

All work will be project based, with designs being developed by the student in consultation with the teacher. You will need to finish some work at home to complete all 3 projects.

What to bring

  • A folder for handouts and notes.
  • Writing paper and pen.
  • Pencil and eraser for drawing jewellery designs.

Other costs

A number of tools will be available to students on a shared basis – including jewellers' pliers, hammers, torches, buffs, drills etc (they are part of the levy you have paid for the course). However, if you do not already have the tools listed below, you will need to purchase them for your personal toolkit from interstate suppliers.
Please mention that you are a student in Tasmania when ordering and ask if they give student discount.

  • 1 jewellers saw-frame (prefer “fixed back” type if possible).
  • 2 dozen jeweller’s saw-blades – grade 2/0.
  • 2 needle files – (2 cut) - 1 x half-round, 1 x round.
  • 1 small scriber.
  • 150mm steel rule.
  • 1.0mm twist drill bit (3/32 shank) OR a 1.0mm drill bit from a hardware store.
Purchase at least 1 of the following:
  • Nickel silver sheet: (silver colour) 150 × 150 × 1.0 thick.
  • Copper sheet: (pink gold colour) 150 × 150 × 1.0mm.
  • OR purchase sterling silver if you prefer (discuss with tutor first).
Silver Solder:
  • 1 metre pack Hard solder wire.
  • 1 metre pack Medium solder wire.
  • 1 metre pack Easy solder wire.
Other requirements:
  • Wet & dry emery papers – You will need to purchase 1 sheet of – 400, 600, 800, 1000 grade (available at hardware stores and Jewellery Suppliers).

Safety Precautions

  • Wear fully enclosed shoes to all classes.
  • Avoid wearing loose clothing.
  • Longer hair? Bring a hair net, hair tie or elastic band to secure your hair.
  • Bring a face mask and safety glasses.
