Course Description

Needle felting is a relatively new craft which is easy to learn, needs few tools and allows endless possibilities for creating 2 and 3 dimensional projects. In this dry felting technique, needles with tiny barbs are pushed into wads of wool to entangle the fibre and create shapes. You can use one or multiple needles, the project can be softly of firmly felted and you can create anything from small brooches to wall hangings to 3D animals and people. What you make is limited only by your imagination.
In this beginner’s course you will learn about the essential tools for needle felting and explore basic felting techniques including:

  • the different types of needles and how to use them to felt
  • different types of fibres
  • mixing and blending fibres
  • shaping
  • sizing and designing a project

We will explore flat felting, 3 dimensional felting and using a wire armature to construct a sculpted design.

What your course will cover

Basic needle felting tools, how to use and look after tools, safety posture and care while felting.
Using fibres – types of wool roving, blending and mixing fibres, laying and constructing fibre.
Flat felting on a foam base, needle techniques, using a stabiliser, thickness of flat felting projects, forming a shape, making and using an armature.
