Course Description

This is a beginner’s course for needle felting. Students will learn about the essential tools for needle felting and the correct techniques for using and caring for these tools.
Learn basic felting techniques including the different types of and how to use needles to felt, the different types of fibres, mixing and blending fibres, shaping, sizing and designing a project.
The course will explore flat felting, 3 dimensional felting and using a wire armature to construct a sculpted design.

What your course will cover

Basic needle felting tools, how to use and look after tools, safety posture and care while felting.
Using fibres – types of wool roving, blending and mixing fibres, laying and constructing fibre.
Flat felting on a foam base, needle techniques, using a stabiliser, thickness of flat felting projects, forming a shape, making and using an armature.
Make a number of small projects to enable students to develop enough skills to enable them create a project of their own design.

What to bring

  • Foam work base 15cm x 15cm
  • Starter needle kit (5 different needles) OR pack of felting needles- variety of gauges - ideally 2x 36 gauge tri blade needle, 2 × 38 gauge tri blade, 2 × 40 gauge tri blade needle, (it is also ok if the needles are star blade or twisted blades) OR pack of 10 38 gauge triblade needles.
  • Merino colour pack of your choice (strong 28.5 micron), 9 colour pack x 2 (100grams merino per pack) OR Corrie Sliver 7 colour pack x 2 - (100 grams of fleece per pack)
  • Armature wire 15 gauge (roll is approx 15m)
  • Packet of cotton pipe cleaners
  • Thimbles x2
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Small flat cushion to put on your knees
