Course description

'How to Paint from Scratch'

This course is for those who want to learn to paint from the beginning and who have little or no previous experience. Essentially painting with any paint involves light. Every paint uses white for this, except for watercolour, which uses more water instead. The course will explain and demonstrate the difference, but use white as its light base. The light and colour concept strategies taught can be implemented with which ever medium that you may choose to pursue in the future

Being able to draw is not a prerequisite but can come in handy.

What your course will cover

  • An introduction to the diverse realm of different paints and their differences and complexities.
  • An introduction to colour and colour relationships.
  • ‘Light’ as the key ingredient to gain effective results.
  • The implementation of tonal values (light) to create 3 dimensional form.
  • How to apply the paint.
  • Natural mistakes that you may make and how to avoid them.
  • Some initial exercises to get started and to explore your palette options.
  • Designs and subjects formulated to implement your new found knowledge and skill into finished artworks.

The ultimate objective of this course is to give students enough grounding to further develop skills independently.

What to bring

  • Container with lid, e.g. ice cream, butter tub, plastic takeaway container etc. (collect them, for one each week)
  • A cake of soap.
  • HB pencil and eraser.
  • 2 jars or cans, suitable for water.
  • A rag.

What to purchase

  • An A4 size sketch book with a minimum 210gsm paper thickness. Canson Montval Watercolour Pad, 300gsm is recommended (available at art shops such as Ad Art or Artery)
  • If you already have paint then mostly what you have should be fine, (except for traditional oils and watercolour). However, the purchase of a tube of ‘Golden Open acrylic titanium white’ would be advantageous and highly recommended (see paint purchase below)
  • If you don’t already have paint, the cheapest and best option to get started is ‘Reeves water mixable oil colour’ 12 piece set (available at Officeworks). You will also need a tube of ‘Golden Open acrylic, titanium white’ (available at Ad Art only).
  • Recommended brushes are flat soft hair taklon. ‘NEEF 987 series’ size 3/8 ; size1/4 ; and size1/16 (available at art shops such as Ad Art or Artery). Alternatively , you may like to choose a ‘J Burrows Flat Taklon Brush Set’ (available at Officeworks) which is cheaper and nearly as good.
  • If you would like further advice, our tutor can advise you and explain further in the first session at which time, materials will be supplied if necessary to get us started.
