Course description
The prerequisite of this course need to have achieved the A1 level of CEFR (96 hours of Adult Education French studying the whole book ‘Grammaire progressive du français débutant complet’) or its equivalent elsewhere or you completed Grade 11 or 12 French and wish to refresh your French. New students should already know the present tense, passé composé and futur proche of all kind of verbs. This French intermediate course is delivered in 8 terms covering a whole new textbook. This is not an intensive course but it will require some study and doing weekly homework.

What your course will cover
In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere, you will cover:
- Regular revision exercises covering all the grammar learned to date.
- Listening and reading exercises to enhance comprehension, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and cultural awareness.
- Development of oral and listening skills with lots of practice of everyday life conversation about familiar topics (work, leisure, food, holidays ...).
You will learn the following grammar:
- Reflexive verbs: se lever, se passer...
- Modal verbs: pouvoir, vouloir, devoir
- The French translations of the verb ‘to know’: savoir et connaître.
- Comparisons: Je suis plus grande que toi. Il fait moins chaud ici qu’au Queensland...
- The future tense called futur simple and the past tense called imparfait.
- Replacement pronouns: en, y, lui, leur ...
- Relative pronouns: qui, que, où
- Passive voice

Niveau débutant, with 2 laughing women having a coffee on a blue and orange cover. the text will be used over 8 terms of the course (128 hours of tuition in total), achieving the A2 level of CEFR (see more information about the CEFR below). The courses won’t follow the chapters as displayed in the book.
- A pen and notebook for work done in class.
- A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
- Any French verb book (or tool).
- Any French/English dictionary (or tool) you may have (eg Collins, Robert).
Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying a book that may be of no use to you then please check the viability of your class with Adult Education before purchasing your textbook.
The french language program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.
The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:
- A1 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French 1 – French for beginners – French 8) completed within around 96 hours: Students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.
- A2 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French Intermediate), completed within around 130 hours: Students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects.
- B1 level: 13 terms of Adult Education (French Independent) completed within around 210 hours: Students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers.
- B2 level: Adult Education (French Advanced): Students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.
- Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.
