Course description

Ink drawing is a classic art form that lends itself to both sensitivity and boldness. With its vivid lines and gentle washes, ink is a very versatile medium and lots of fun to experiment with when exploring both precise and organic application techniques.

This course is designed as a contnuation of the Drawing with Ink – Beginners course and is best suited for students with prior experience of ink drawing basics, wanting to explore more advanced techniques.

What your course will cover

  • Overview of materials and tools. Explore the mark-making potential of dip pens, technical pens, painting with brushes and a variety of other tools.
  • Line and value – develop techniques for adding value and shading with a pen.
  • Ink wash – Use multiple layered “washes” of ink to develop tone and the illusion of form.
  • Drawing textures – Creating the illusion of textures through various mark-making techniques.
  • Landscape drawing – How to create the illusion of depth.
  • Still Life drawing – Using line and shading techniques to describe the form of a subject.
  • Mixing methods – How to combine watercolour with ink wash, pen applications and stencilling to create a looser, more expressive image.

Tools and Materials you need to bring

  • Bottle of Black India ink
  • Technical pens – Black felt tip pens
  • Dip pen (bamboo or calligraphy style with fine nib)
  • Pipette
  • Toothbrush
  • Selection of brushes (including a no.6 round nylon & several flat wash brushes)
  • Basic set of watercolours
  • A3 drawing paper 220gsm pad or sheets (Como brand recommended or smooth watercolour paper)
  • A3 Sketchbook
  • 2B graphite pencil, white plastic eraser
  • Plastic palette with shallow wells
  • Containers for holding water and mixing washes (small jam jars with lids work well)
  • Water mister bottle with fine spay nozzle and mini spritzer spray bottles (available at Shiploads)
  • Sponge
  • Piece of old towel or cotton cloth
  • Apron/old shirt to protect your clothing

Please bring anything else you think might be useful.

Important information

Most classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying a class materials that may be of no use to you, please check the viability of your class with Adult Education before making your purchase.

Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.

Please choose your course carefully. A full refund is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
