Course description

This course is a continuation course from French 4. New students wishing to enrol in this course should know the present tense of all types of verbs and have completed French 1 to French 4 or done 48 hours of French. The French 5 course will focus on the past tense ‘passé composé’ and the verbs ‘avoir’ and ‘faire’.

What your course will cover

You will mainly develop your conversational skills and cover the following points:

• To talk about daily routine, leisure and taste: je commence mon travail à 9 heures, je fais les courses le samedi matin, j’aime les tomates ...
• To talk about meals: Le matin, je mange des céréales et je bois du thé ...
• To talk about the weather: Il fait quel temps ? Il fait beau
• Verb 'faire'
• Partitive articles: du pain, de la natation, des smoothies
• Quantities: un paquet de biscuits, 100 grammes de tomates...
• Past tense ‘passé composé’ of verbs of the first group

Please be aware that this program is a guideline and will be adjusted in regard to the pace of each group so there may be some variations from one term to another.

What to bring

• A pen and notebook for work done in class.
• A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.

• Please note – Grammaire progressive du français is a full collection of books so please ensure that you purchase the level A1.1 débutant complet book by the 2 authors (as above) with the cream cover
• This textbook is used from French 1 to French 8 courses (96 hours of tuition in total), achieving the A1 level of CEFR (see more information about the CEFR below).
• Be aware that the courses don’t follow the chapters as displayed in the book. If you are unsure if the level of this class is suitable, contact Adult Education before enrolling.

Important information

Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying a book that may be of no use to you then please check the viability of your class with Adult Education before purchasing your textbook.

The french language program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.

The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:

• A1 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French 1 – French for beginners – French 8) completed within around 96 hours: Students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.

• A2 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French Intermediate), completed within around 130 hours: Students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects.

• B1 level: 13 terms of Adult Education (French Independent) completed within around 210 hours: Students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers.

• B2 level: Adult Education (French Advanced): Students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.

• Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity

Please choose your course carefully. A full refund is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
