Course description

This course is a continuation course from French 4. New students wishing to enrol in this course should know the present tense of all types of verbs and have completed French 1 to French 4 or done 48 hours of French. The French 5 course will focus on the past tense ‘passé composé’ and the verb ‘faire’.

No textbook purchase required.

What your course will cover

You will mainly develop your conversational skills and cover the following points:

• To talk about daily routine, leisure and taste: je commence mon travail à 9 heures, je fais les courses le samedi matin, j’aime les tomates ...
• To talk about meals: Le matin, je mange des céréales et je bois du thé ...
• To talk about the weather: Il fait quel temps ? Il fait beau
• Verb 'faire'
• Partitive articles: du pain, de la natation, des smoothies
• Quantities: un paquet de biscuits, 100 grammes de tomates...
• Past tense ‘passé composé’ of verbs of the first group

Please be aware that this program is a guideline and will be adjusted in regard to the pace of each group so there may be some variations from one term to another.

What to bring

• A pen and notebook for work done in class.
• A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.

Your tutor will supply all notes and handouts for this class.

The french language program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.

The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:

• A1 level achieved in 7 to 8 terms of Adult Education completed within around 100 hours: students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.
• A2 level achieved in 8 to 9 terms of Adult Education in classes called ‘French Intermediate 1’ followed by ‘French Intermediate 2’, completed within around 140 hours: students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects
• A2 consolidation to introduction of B1 levels achieved in 13 terms of Adult Education in classes called ‘French independent’, completed within around 200 hours: students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers
• B1 and B2 levels are not offered with Adult Education: students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.

Please choose your course carefully. A full refund is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
