Course description

This is a beginners course in Mandarin, the official language spoken by all Chinese in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. The course is for those with no or very limited knowledge of the language and who may want to travel to the Chinese speaking region, who would just like to speak Chinese or who are curious about the language and culture or simply just want to keep the brain ticking over. The class will continue to the next level in the following term if there are sufficient enrolments. Text purchase required.

What your course will cover

In a relaxed and supportive learning atmosphere, you will learn:

  • How to pronounce words, with the use of tones and a phonetic system Pinyin.
  • How to read some basic Chinese characters – numbers, people, sun, moon, mountain, rain, son…
  • To understand basic grammar and say simple sentences.
  • To recognise and use appropriate greetings.
  • To recognise and use a few everyday expressions: days of the week, months, year, time, age, kinship terms, occupations and numbers up to 10.
  • To practice conversations in Chinese with other students.
  • Interesting features of Chinese culture, customs and its people.

What to bring

  • Pen and note book for work done in class.
  • A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.

Important information

  • Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol. If you are concerned about buying an item that may be of no use to you then please check the viability of your class with adult education before purchasing.

Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.

Please choose your course carefully. A full refund is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
