This is a beginners course in Mandarin, the official language spoken by all Chinese in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. The course is for those with no or very limited knowledge of the language and who may want to travel to the Chinese speaking region, who would just like to speak Chinese or who are curious about the language and culture or simply just want to keep the brain ticking over. The class will continue to the next level in the following term if there are sufficient enrolments. Text purchase required.

  • To understand basic grammar and say simple sentences.
  • To recognise and use appropriate greetings.
  • To recognise and use a few everyday expressions: days of the week, months, year, time, age, kinship terms, occupations and numbers up to 10.
  • To practice conversations in Chinese with other students.
