Spanish Intermediate - A2

Course Description

The Intermediate course is suitable for students who have completed 5 terms of study with Adult Education (55 hours, approx.) or its equivalent elsewhere.

The Intermediate course will be delivered over five to seven terms of study to cover the 10 Units of the textbook ‘Español en Marcha 2’ which will be used in class.  

New students who wish to enrol in this course are advised to contact Adult Education to find out whether it is the correct course for them, or to enquire about which unit is being covered in class at the time. This is not an intensive course, but it will require some home study and weekly homework. Some reading is also done in class and/or at home to reinforce the written comprehension.  The class will continue to the next term if there are sufficient enrolments. Course materials will be provided in class, but it is advisable for students to buy the textbook (See details below).

What your course will cover

  • Unit 1: Presentar y saludar / Greetings & introductions. Talk about yourself, likes & dislikes. Daily routine. Talking about the past holidays.
  • Unit 2: Biografias / Biographies. Asking questions. Talking about personal events related to the past.
  • Unit 3: Costumbres / Daily routines & customs. Talk about family & people in general. Character & moods. Talk about recent & past experiences.
  • Unit 4: Tiempo libre / Free time. Expressing wishes. Talking about finding or renting a house.  Talking about leisure activities. Questions about daily life using pronouns .
  • Unit 5: Antes y ahora / Now and before.  Talk about past habits and past routines. Make comparisons. Finding your way in a city. Talking about means of transportation.
  • Unit 6: Cocinar /Cooking. Online buying and selling personal items.  Buying food using quantities.  Cooking vocabulary. A recipe. Ordering food and drinks.
  • Unit 7: Consejos / Advice. Give advice & instructions. Going to the doctor. Talk about different moods. Making suggestions for a healthy lifestyle. Express wishes using the subjunctive tense.
  • Unit 8: El periodico / Newspapers. Talk about work and working routines. Read some newspaper news. Indirect speech in the past: say what someone said.
  • Unit 9: Predicciones / Predictions. Talking about how long you and others have been doing something. Making plans and talking about future activities. Making plans using the conditional. Expressing your likes and giving opinions.
  • Unit 10: Planes / Plans. Talking about your plans. Travel companions: what kind of traveller are you? Making plans using the subjunctive. Describe objects and say what they are for.

You will learn the following grammar:

  • Reflexives verbs: me levanto temprano. Verb gustar: me gusta viajar. The simple past: En 2019 fuimos a Turquía.
  • The simple past: _Ana nació en 1990. Se casó a los veintitrés años. _ Interrogative pronouns ¿Que prefieres un café o un té?
  • Ser and estar: Ana está contenta, Pepe es muy tranquilo. Present perfect: ¿Has tenido un buen día? ¿Has estado alguna vez en América Latina?  No, todavía no he estado.
  • The conditional: me gustaría vivir en Madrid.  Personal pronouns: el libro, se lo he dado a Juan. Esta raqueta me la ha regalado mi madre.
  • The imperfect:  Antes yo vivía en una ciudad pequeña.  Compartives: Mi casa es más nueva que la tuya.
  • Indefinite pronouns: ¿Hay alguien aquí? No hay nadie en casa. Impersonal expresions_: se vende casa en la playa._ 
  • The imperative: Antes de salir, apaga la luz.  Present Subjunctive: Espero que descanses bien. 
  • The imperfect of estar + gerund:  Ella estaba durmiendo cuando llegué.  Indirect speech:  Ana dijo que estaba cansada para ir a la fiesta. 
  • The simple future tense. Use llevar + gerund:  llevo trabajando aquí desde hace 5 años. Conditional sentences: Si quieres viajar, ven con nosotros. 
  • The verb ir + infinitive: este verano voy a estudiar inglés.  The verb pensar + infinitive: _este verano pienso estudiar español. _  Use of cuando + Subjunctive: Cuando llegues, llámame.  Relative clauses: El gato es un animal que duerme mucho.

What to bring

  • Pen and notebook for work done in class.
  • A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
