George Goldsteen was born in 1942 and lost over 100 relatives in the Holocaust, including his father. He received his education and training in the Maritime fields in Holland, Canada and Australia and worked as a navigator, hydrographic surveyor and a research consultant. He joined the AMC in 1983 as a full-time lecturer in charge of postgraduate studies in his fields. He left the AMC in 1994 and began to devote more of his time to the Jewish community of Tasmania. Since 1994 he has tutored in Jewish topics at the School for Seniors and since 2003 also at Adult Education. He is a fully practicing Jew and the Hon. Manager of the Chabad House (Jewish Community Centre) in Launceston.
