I was born in Berlin and came to Australia in 1954 by ship via the Suez Canal which was still open. Berlin was still in ruins which was very dramatic for a child. I am now an Australian citizen and I enjoy teaching German (to keep in practice). On arrival into Australia I could not speak any English. I worked as an interpreter in workplaces and continue to speak German to relatives in Germany.
