This course is an introduction to the current French language, with a strong focus on pronunciation. It lays the first part of foundations of the French language for further study, as well as learning how to politely ask and give introductory information about yourself.

In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere, you will learn:
- To recognise and use appropriate greetings and polite phrases (bonjour, merci, …)
- Formal and informal 'you' in French: rules about using 'tu' and 'vous' and use of titles to greet (monsieur, mademoiselle, madame)
- To ask and give personal information (name, nationality, marital status, job, origin and how do you feel): Je m’appelle Paul, je suis australien, je suis marié, je suis dentiste et je suis de Sydney. Ça va bien. Et vous ?
- To purchase in a bakery: je voudrais un croissant, s'il vous plaît. C'est tout, merci.
- Classroom phrases (Vous lisez, vous répétez ...)
- Cultural points
You will learn the following grammar:
- The French pronunciation of the alphabet
- The French rules of pronunciation: Nasal sounds, liaisons, abréviations
- Numbers from 0 to 69
- Definite articles: le - la - l' - les
- Masculine & feminine, singular & plural forms of nouns and adjectives
- Use of 'bon' and 'bien': le français, c'est bien et le pain au chocolat, c'est bon !
- Subject personal pronouns: je, tu, il, ...
- Present tense of the verb 'to be'
- Interrogative phrase and pronouns: est-ce que / comment / où / d'où
A pen and notebook for work done in class.
A folder for your many handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
Your tutor will supply all notes and handouts for this class.
- The program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.
- The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:
- A1 level: 6 terms of Adult Education (French 1 - French for beginners to Continuers 7), completed within 130 hours: students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.
- A2 level: 8 to 9 terms of Adult Education (French Intermediate 1 & French Intermediate 2), completed within around 140 hours: students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects
- B1 level: French independent with Adult Education. Students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers
- B2 level: Students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.
Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity.
