Course description
This French course is suitable for students feeling comfortable to converse in French in class at an acceptable level on a wide range of everyday life topics. It is designed for people who have achieved the A1 and A2 levels of the CEFR through Adult Education or other organisations, for people who have spent a few month in a French speaking country or have done French at Uni.
It is important to know that students in this course may have different levels of knowledge and skill. So students should come with a positive attitude to learning.
The aim of the course is to improve your conversation skills in terms of fluency and accuracy, extend your vocabulary, revise grammar points.
New students who wish to enrol in this course are advised to contact Adult Education to find out whether it is the correct course for them.
This is not an intensive course but it will require some study and doing weekly homework.
What your course will cover
- You will consolidate your language skills and practise your conversation skills in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
- Topics will be chosen with a view to extending the range of subjects about which you can converse and will be guided by the wishes of the group. Please be ready to have your say!
- The tutor will also refresh grammar points.
In a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere, you will have:
- Regular revision covering all the grammar learned to date
- Listening and reading exercises to enhance comprehension, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and cultural awareness
- Development of oral and listening skills with lots of practice on all kind of topics (work, leisure, food, holidays ...)
Prerequisites
- Students should have completed the A1 and A2 level of CEFR (equivalent of 400 hours minimum of Adult Education French).
What to bring
- A pen and notebook for work done in class.
- A folder for your handouts – an expandable A4 folder with plastic sleeves is recommended.
- Any French verb book (or tool).
- French/English dictionary (or tool) (eg Collins, Robert).
Most language classes fill up quickly. However, your class could be cancelled if not enough people enrol.
The french language program follows the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), which has become the international reference for learning and teaching European languages, as well as assessing language acquisition. Students may wish to sit for the exam called DELF.
The CEFR is divided in 4 levels:
- A1 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French 1 – French for beginners – French 8) completed within around 96 hours: Students are able to introduce themselves, talk about their hobbies, explain where they live, describe relationships etc.
- A2 level: 8 terms of Adult Education (French Intermediate), completed within around 130 hours: Students are able to communicate and exchange on familiar and habitual subjects.
- B1 level: 13 terms of Adult Education (French Independent) completed within around 210 hours: Students are able to interact with ease in French on familiar topics with native speakers.
- B2 level: Adult Education (French Advanced): Students are able to communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease. It is also the level of language proficiency that most French universities require from undergraduate foreign students.
- Please note that children must not attend this class unless it is a specified parent/child activity

Please choose your course carefully. A full refund is payable in the event that a class is cancelled. No other refunds are considered except for extenuating circumstances which are supported by a written application.
