Course description

This course is delivered at an intermediate to advanced level, being suitable for students with drawing and painting experience.
The aim of this course is to inspire students to develop skill and creative scope, whilst also allowing for individual exploration & experimentation.
You will be guided in a mixed media approach to creating images that is based on finding creative ways to use both traditional and contemporary media/materials.
Enjoy the light and space of this large studio environment as you develop and refine your drawing and painting skills during structured sessions or work at your own pace.

What your course will cover

Each week your tutor will introduce a selection of different media with demonstrations and practical exercises to guide and inspire. Projects will be tailored to the groups needs with exercises based on subjects such as still life scenarios, landscape and projects of personal interest.

Individual and group instruction will be given with time spent appreciating work and progress throughout the class.

  • Overview of drawing/painting media and materials – how they work in combined application (including oils, acrylics, charcoal, graphite, pastels, pencils, inks & collage)
  • Experiment with wet and dry media, exploring their mark-making potential
  • Develop strategies for beginning a work, layering and making use of ‘accidental’ marks.
  • Utilise small studies to build larger, sustained drawings/paintings.
  • Explore the duality involved in making successful artworks – intellect and emotion
  • Play with scale, colour, light, volume and composition.
  • Explore painting techniques and applications.
  • Colour mixing and glazing.
  • Investigate alternative materials to use as supports (other than paper, wood or canvas)
  • Strategies for re-using unfinished/unresolved works
  • Developing a personal style and ways in which to ‘loosen up’.

What to bring

  • A3 Visual Diary
  • Sheet of A3 drawing paper (200gsm) or small canvas
  • A coloured highlighter pen (broad tip)
  • Basic drawing media (2B pencil, 4B compressed charcoal & eraser)
  • Paint brushes (include a no.6 round nylon & several flat bristle brushes)
  • Tube of white acrylic paint (Jo Sonja brand preferred)
  • Containers for holding water & a palette for mixing
  • Apron/old shirt to protect clothing
  • Waterbased paper glue
  • Roll of masking tape
  • Retractable craft knife
  • small hairdryer (optional)
  • Example of your own artwork – (small finished drawing or painting)

If you already have a basic ‘art kit’ of materials that you use, then bring this along also.

A more comprehensive list of media and materials will be discussed during the first class.
